MORE WAYS TO EXPLORE
Choose a day that suits you
These are alternative combinations, not a list to finish in one day. Choose one area or main attraction, then add a meal nearby.
- Hop-on, hop-off day: Big Bus sightseeing + one museum or memorial visit + lunch near your route. Check the last bus at your return stop and keep a backup way to reach the STS coach.
- Mall museums: American History or Natural History + Jaleo or Oyamel.
- Capitol day: a reserved Capitol tour + a shorter nearby walk.
- Interactive history: Spy Museum + a flexible meal, leaving room to reach the STS meeting point.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Your suggested day
This is a flexible, self-guided plan—not a timed STS itinerary. Use your host’s confirmed drop-off, free-time window and return instructions.
- 1
Start with the Smithsonian museum you most want to visit. For Air and Space in DC, reserve a free timed-entry pass ahead of time and choose the Washington location.
- 2
Spend your first few hours at that museum rather than rushing through several. Break for lunch before starting an outdoor walk.
- 3
Use the National Mall as a flexible afternoon. Choose nearby memorials or a second museum based on energy, weather and your actual meeting point.
- 4
If you want a sit-down meal, reserve Old Ebbitt Grill only if its location fits your return route. Head toward the host’s meeting point with time to spare.
Specific ideas & where to book

National Air and Space Museum — DC
Free timed-entry passes are required at the DC museum. Reserve the correct location; the Udvar-Hazy Center is a different outing.
Reserve free museum passes ↗National Museum of Natural History
An alternative museum anchor. Its official visit page currently says general entry does not require passes; check hours and current visit guidance.

Compare museums & passes ↗Big Bus Washington, DC — hop-on, hop-off tour
City sightseeing · Ride between designated stops near major landmarks, then hop off for a closer look. Compare the current routes and ticket inclusions before booking. Our suggested free-day plan is one museum or memorial stop plus a sightseeing ride, with time for lunch. Check the route, first and last buses, service changes and boarding point for your date. Allow for traffic and waits, and arrange a separate return option if sightseeing service ends before your STS meeting time. This optional ticket is separate from your STS coach journey.
Compare hop-on, hop-off tickets & book ↗U.S. Capitol tour
Capitol Hill · Reserve a guided tour through the official Visitor Center. Check tour days, security restrictions and the arrival instructions; allow transport time from the museum area.
Reserve an official tour ↗International Spy Museum
L’Enfant Plaza · Interactive espionage exhibits make a different kind of history day. This is a paid museum, separate from the Smithsonian; choose a dated ticket and allow a few hours.
Choose admission & book ↗National Museum of American History
National Mall · Explore American history, culture and objects. Check the official visit page for hours and current entry arrangements; a good alternative to Air and Space rather than a third rushed museum.

Old Ebbitt Grill
A named table-service option near the White House area. Review menus and reserve through the restaurant’s official site; allow travel time from your museum.
Menus, locations & visiting details ↗Oyamel — Washington, DC
Penn Quarter · Mexican food and a sit-down break north of the Mall. Select the DC location and use the official reservation option.
Menus, locations & visiting details ↗Jaleo — Washington, DC
Penn Quarter · Spanish tapas, useful for sharing several dishes. Review the DC menu and reserve a table that fits your museum schedule.
Menus, locations & visiting details ↗Ben’s Chili Bowl
U Street · A casual half-smoke and chili stop. This is farther from the Mall, so choose it as a deliberate neighborhood detour and check the branch address and return journey.

Find your stops
These are sightseeing locations, not confirmed bus meeting points. Open a stop to get directions from your actual location.
- National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC ↗
- National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC ↗
- Old Ebbitt Grill, Washington DC ↗
- Our suggested short plan is one museum plus nearby outdoor sights. Add distant memorials only if you have enough free time.
- Spring blossoms depend on weather and bloom timing; do not treat them as guaranteed on your trip date.
- Museum security lines take time, and bag storage may not be available. Travel light and check the museum’s entry rules.
- Rain plan: spend longer in your chosen museum. Check mobility access on its visit page; a walking map does not establish an accessible route.
For each stop, check the journey from your actual location in Maps. Add waiting and boarding time yourself; a map estimate is not a guaranteed arrival time. For a gentler day, select one main attraction and a nearby meal.
